I would like to thank everyone for checking out my blog, two weeks later and I cracked 1000 views, so it is greatly appreciated! On the topic of celebration, here is a cake! Although this cake serves a different purpose. Last week my good friend Matt grieved from a close passing. So, to cheer him up, I ordered him a cheesecake, specially a French Vanilla Cheesecake, his favourite. He called into work the other day, and he seems quite down so I told him my plans to buy him a cake to cheer him up, he could not stop thanking me and saying how much it means to him. I was a little stunned that it would make such a big difference, but I guess it's the little thoughts that go a big way. Tomorrow I am calling into work a couple of hours early so I can give it to him. So, Matt, this is for you!
Cake is generally known as a sweet baked dessert, therefore served as a dessert after a meal or served at celebrations such as weddings, birthdays, etc. Though, the modern cake is very different to how they were first made. Dating back to the 13th century, it's oldest form, they were commonly forms of fried bread and cheesecakes, in the shape of a disk.
The term "cake" was derived from it's Viking origin, from the Old Norse term "kaka". Back then, it was more difficult to distinguish the difference between cakes, breads and pastries. Different places had different recipes for making cakes, for example, the Greeks used beer as a leavened, frying fritters in olive oil and making cheesecake with goat's milk. Where as in Ancient Rome they used bread dough mixed with rare ingredients such as eggs with honey and butter. In England, early baked cakes were considered a form of bread, with just the differentiating characteristic of the cake as a round flat shape. Sponge cakes originated during the Renaissance, possible in Spain, in which the cake was leavened with beaten eggs.
Over the centuries cakes have, as you may call it, evolved. As people have improved their skills and experienced with different ingredients and methods, people have managed to create the most amazing cakes!
Speaking of great cakes, I would like to thank The Cheesecake Shop for making this great cake, they never fail to make a fantastic cake! I highly recommend them if you're in need a great cake! I can't wait to see Matt tomorrow and present him with this great French Vanilla Cheesecake at 9am, it's never too early for cake, right?
